Portugal sends 5% of its vaccines to Portuguese-speaking African countries

Portuguese Foreign Minister Augusto Santos Silva said today, Wednesday, that Portugal will send 5 percent of the Corona virus vaccine doses it will receive to Portuguese-speaking African countries and to East Timor in Southeast Asia during the second half of this year.

In statements to reporters, Santos Silva explained that his country's distribution of vaccine doses between these countries comes within the framework of "bilateral cooperation" efforts, indicating that local health workers there will be trained to administer the doses, according to what was reported by the British "Guardian" newspaper.

The newspaper stated that the population of Portugal is slightly more than 10 million people, and the European country has the right to obtain 35 million vaccine doses during this year as part of the vaccine purchase program coordinated by the European Union, and most of that quantity will be used in two-dose vaccination, leaving Portugal with millions of additional doses, and will be equivalent The rate of 5% is 1.75 million doses.

The newspaper pointed out that the group of African countries consists of the former Portuguese colonies in Africa, namely: Angola, Mozambique, Cape Verde, Guinea-Bissau, Equatorial Guinea, the Republic of Sao Tome and Principe, and East Timor is also a former colony of Portugal in Southeast Asia.

African countries are struggling to obtain vaccines for about 1.3 billion people combined, and only some countries on the continent have started giving doses, according to the newspaper.
